Dubai Fact-File Part 6:
Individual Business Employment Issues
6.2 Dubai Employment vs Self-Employment Tax Issues
The differences between employment and self-employment:
As Dubai does not have any corporate or personal income tax
or national insurance contributions, one of the key distinctions
between the self-employed and employees does not exist. However,
in other ways, the situation is the same as in most other
countries. A self-employed individual (Sole Establishment,
or sole proprietor) is the owner of the business, provides
the funding for the business and takes all of the risks (although
a local sponsor is still necessary).
An employee is paid by the business or individual to whom
they are contracted, and is entitled to the employment rights
laid down in Dubai’s laws. These include rules on working
hours and rates of pay. Two types of employment contract exist:
limited or fixed term contracts and unlimited contracts, which
are open ended.
Partners in a business are not classified as employees.
