6.3 Switzerland Apprenticeship and Work Experience Schemes
Apprenticeship Schemes
Most children start an apprenticeship (Berufslehre) of some
description after they have left elementary school. This can
take between two and four years to complete, depending on
the profession. The scheme works on the basis that an apprentice
will perform work with a company or other organization and
attend school for perhaps two days per week. There are opportunities
for apprentices to obtain employment at the end of the apprenticeship.
Work Experience Schemes
In addition to the Berufslehre system mentioned above, there
are numerous opportunities to gain experience in seasonal
employment in Switzerland; Certain countries operate a young
worker exchange scheme in cooperation with Switzerland, offering
young people the opportunity to live and work in a foreign
country. There is an upper age limited of 30 (in some countries
35) and candidates must have at least two years of professional
training behind them.
