7.1 Switzerland Business Social Security
The Social Security System
The Swiss social security system covers five main areas.
These are:
- Old age, survivors and invalidity insurance;
- Illnesses and accidents;
- Income compensation allowances (eg maternity);
- Unemployment insurance;
- Family allowances
Contributions towards each insurance fund vary. Self-employed
persons must pay between 4.2% and 7.8% of earnings towards
the old age and survivors fund and between 0.754% and 1.4%
towards the health fund and between 0.162% and 0.3% towards
the loss of income fund. Self-employed persons do not contribute
to the unemployment insurance fund. Contributions to other
funds can be made on a voluntary basis. Contribution rates
may vary from canton to canton.
Employees must contribute between 11.65% and 24.65% of salary
covering all funds. Employers must contribute to all funds
– the amount varies between 12.01% and 29.3%.
