UK Fact-File Part 1:
Business Formation for Individuals

1.6 UK Business Organisations

Organizations representing the interests of individuals in business

There are various organisations (and collections of resources) which exist to represent the interests of independents, both trade-related and general. These include:

  • Business Link (http://www.businesslink.gov.uk) has been developed by experts in government and business support organisations to provide as much information as possible for individuals or companies starting out in business. Their website is comprehensive and very useful, with links to external bodies and agencies.
  • The Federation of Small Businesses (http://www.fsb.org.uk) offers advice and support to small businesses and it is possible to apply for membership.
  • The Institute of Directors (http://www.iod.com) is a non-party political organization with over 55,000 members. It provides opportunities for company directors to establish relationships with other directors, and can provide advice, training and seminars for its members, as well as acting as a representative body in discussions with the government, and in other arenas.
  • The British Chambers of Commerce (http://www.britishchambers.org.uk/) represents Chambers of Commerce across the country. The Chambers of Commerce offer training, seminars and support through a network of local offices and foster growth of local business.

There are many specific organizations and professional bodies that look after the interests of a particular profession or trade and they offer advice and information. Examples include the British Dental Trade Association, Institute of Chartered Accountants, Federation of Licensed Victuallers Associations and the National Union of Teachers.
