withholding tax

I did some work in France recently as a contractor, and my employer deducted 12% tax. Is this right? Since I'm a Brit, shouldn't there be a double tax treaty? Can I claim the tax back against my UK tax bill?

I'm not an accountant or anything, but the withholding in France might have been for their version of "National Insurance" - so you want to find out if you can get a credit to your UK National Insurance through EU welfare agreements or similar treaties. Something similar happened to me whilst working in Norway.
