Employers and employees must pay social
insurance contributions. The current rate for employers and
employees alike is 6.8% of gross income, with the state contributing
4.3%. The maximum amount on which contributions are payable
is EUR48,048. Employers may also make contributions to the:
social cohesion fund, the redundancy fund, the industrial
training fund, and the central holiday fund.
Self-employed persons (including sole proprietors) pay 12.6%,
usually on their notional income (although they can pay on
their actual income, if preferred) with the state also contributing

Voluntary contributions are also permitted, for those working
abroad for a Cypriot employer, or who have interrupted their
social security contributions, for whatever reason.
Contributions to the Social Insurance fund go towards pensions
and other benefits.
